Abstract

The research study titled the “Nigerian Press and Gatekeeping Roles on The Success of Newspapers and Magazine (Case Study of Punch Newspaper)” gatekeeping is nothing but voluntary self-censorship performed by the media themselves which emanate from the understanding by journalists that apart from legal restrictions on what is to be published, the journalists have a duty to be socially responsible to their readers in whatever materials they package for them.

The Gatekeeping theory and Source Credibility Theory was adopted as the Theoretical Framework for the study. The main objective of the study was to examine the role of the Nigerian Press and the gatekeeping role on the success of newspapers and magazines. Survey research method was adopted to gather vast data whereby questionnaire was used as research collection instrument whereby 100 copies of questionnaire were printed and administered to the students of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree out of which 94 copies was recovered and analyzed in the study. Findings shows that the level of objectivity in news reporting by journalists in Nigeria and their performance of the gatekeeping function placed high priority on the most important news reports. The researcher therefore recommends that media houses must ensure that only experienced and highly competent media professionals are employed and assigned sensitive media responsibilities, especially those that which have to do with the gatekeeping functions.
